Run for Art

If it's snowing in Black Mountain on the morning of Nov. 1...I wonder how the runners will feel about doing 5K in it.

The prizes are almost finished for them however.

Charles Freeland was glazing the plate a few nights ago, and then it was fired and out of the kiln on Friday!

Open Studio time

Each person focused intently upon their work.  The Thursday Open Studio was peaceful and busy.

The teacher said...

Geoff Bird is Marsha's ceramics teacher.
He gave her a challenge to make something looser, more free in design and glaze.  Thus the tray in the foreground.  Amazingly different from Marsha's other works around it.

I personally like the casserole!

Shhh, these are for the run

Dry but not fired yet, Black Mountain 5K Run for your Art medallions were sitting in the studio the other day.  So if my spying on them gets me in trouble, please come visit me in jail!  PS, I don't know when the run actually is.

Not as romantic, but necessary

This step is covering your work with plastic...
A very necessary step for people who can't be in the studio for 8 hours at a time.
But wait, on Tues and Thurs. it is pretty possible to do just that.
Take Charles' Tues class, and from 10 am till 4 pm you can work on clay.
Or take Geoff's Thurs class, and you can work from 1 pm till 8 pm.
Ok, it's not quite 8 hours!
Thanks Jane, for being our model today!

Ready...

Bette's trays are waiting.  When the glaze has been applied, wares will wait on a shelf a few days for a full kiln load.  The next time we see these they will be finished.

Amy's friend

Today Amy only had time to stop and check that her clay hadn't dried too much.  So she brought her little friend, Penney.

Mathilda's incised designs

Mathilda teaches one of our classes at BMCA Clay Studio.  She is an accomplished potter, and has claimed for herself a great technique of designs on the surface by incising.

If you can't sign up for her 6 week class, she also teaches one-day shorter classes...by appointment.

She'll demonstrate the technique she uses to incise designs at the Clay Club meeting on Nov. 12, 6:30 pm.

The Clay Club is open to anyone interested in clay...and is a great opportunity for potters who work in their own studios to come together and socialize and share news.  Their monthly meetings include a Pot Luck supper, so come over and bring a dish to share!  The November meeting includes a great video.  More news on that soon!

Pat's glazing

When you start with a dozen basic glazes, then try one over another, that's over a hundred possibilities.  Pat shows by apron that she really gets into her clay work!

Vanessa & Extruder

Vanessa is on the cleaning up phase of her first time using the extruder.  And now she's got some really great ideas of what to do with the products, square shaped tubes to turn into....?

Practice pays off

Amelia works to perfect her techniques, from 7 pounds of clay to make a platter to the hundredth practice handle she's pulling.  It's worth it!

Bonnie's rollin' along

Yesterday you saw Bonnie seated and working at a table, and here she is using the slab roller and making some little forms.  You never know what Bonnie will come up with next...but they are all beautiful.
