Don't miss the free glaze details given this Thurs. Jan 12, 3-4. The new glazes and techniques will be demonstrated by Charles Freeland.

At present, two of our classes haven't had enough students sign up in order to hold them. At this time, Will Beyers and Annie Singletary's classes are on hold.

Next Thurs, Jan 12, from 3-4, Charles Freeland will talk and demo our studio glazes. In case you haven't heard, he's mixed new batches of all the old ones, and added some different recipes. It sounds like the new year will start with some yummy delicious new color combinations!

I hope you all can come to this free demo during open studio time. Our regular studio classes start on Mon. Jan 9, and there's room for you if you haven't signed up for a class yet! (See schedule to the right of this posting)

Pottery Classes Offered at BMCA Clay Studio Beginning January 9

Beginning on Thursday, January 5 from 4-6 pm with a demonstration of making pottery by teachers Charles Freeland and Annie Singletary, the Black Mountain Center for the Arts Clay Studio will kick off 2012 with classes and other activities centered on clay. Classes begin on Monday, January 9, continuing for six weeks through February 16. Each Adult Clay Class covers clay basics for beginners on wheel and hand building, but is also appropriate for students with previous clay experience. The Clay Studio sits adjacent to the Center at 225 W. State Street. To register or for more information call 828/669-0930, beginning January 3.

The BMCA Clay Studio is a teaching studio offering Adult Clay Classes that are taught by four experienced, area potters. Upcoming classes will be offered on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Mondays from 4-6 pm Will Byers of Byers Pottery in Black Mountain is the teacher. On Tuesdays from 10 am – noon Annie Singletary of Annie Singletary Ceramics in Black Mountain teaches, and from 4-6 pm Charles Freeland of Charles Freeland Pottery in Montreat is the teacher. On Thursdays from 4-6 pm Geoff Bird of Morning Sky Pottery in Swannanoa teaches an ongoing class that has a rolling enrollment in which a student can start any week.

Each class consists of six instructional sessions of two hours, and includes several times for practice in Open Studio each week. Tuition is $170, which covers instruction and a lab fee for clay, glazes and firing. In addition, an option for experienced potters who want to work on their own is available as an Independent Study during Open Studio times. This option requires approval from Studio Manager Freeland, and costs $100 for six weeks (cost of clay is extra.) A clay class makes a great gift for someone who wants to return to their love for clay or who wants to try it out for the first time.

The Clay Studio Student/Teacher Annual Exhibit is currently on display at the Center’s Upper Gallery and features a wide variety of works from drums to dinnerware. The Center will re-open January 3; hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, 10-5 and Thursday, 11-3.

This Friday, December 2, please come to the Center for the Arts in Black Mountain.
Holly Jolly will arrive with the setting of the sun.

Festivities along all the streets will continue through the front door of the BMCA...leading you upstairs to a gallery exhibit of the ceramic artists of our Clay Studio. Music and refreshments will add to your shopping pleasure.

Sales of clay art will include beautiful one-of-a-kind tree ornaments made by the community members. There will also be gorgeous pottery for sale, with a percentage of all sales supporting the Center for the Arts.

The exhibit will continue through the next month at The Black Mountain Center for the Arts in the gallery.

November Is a Good Time for a Pottery Class at BMCA Clay Studio

The Black Mountain Center for the Arts Clay Studio is offering additional pottery classes slated to begin during November, just in time to make some fun gifts for the holidays. Or sign up for a class and give yourself a relaxing time that’s fun and therapeutic without leaving town. A class consists of six 2-hour sessions on the wheel or with slab work with an experienced potter, 25 lbs. of clay, twelve to fifteen hours a week of Open Studio practice time, glazing instruction, and firings of the pots you make. All classes are set up as Basic Adult Classes. Within that concept students may advance to as high a level as they and the teacher are willing to work together. Many students take a class over and over in order to continue learning about glazes, clay bodies, altered shapes, and more. Whether students are beginners or experienced they are able to find a time to work with the teacher to hone their skills.

Classes this November are on a staggered schedule.

The first class begins Tuesday, November 1 from 10 am – noon with potter Annie Singletary (anniesingletary.com).
The second class begins Tuesday, November 15 from 4-6 pm with Studio Manager, potter Charles Freeland (charlesfreelandpottery.com).
In addition, Geoff Bird (www.facebook.com/pages/Morning-Sky-Pottery-Shop/101185893264499) teaches an ongoing class on Thursdays from 4-6 pm that students can join at any time.

Each of these three classes is taught for 6 sessions. The tuition, which includes lab fee, is $170.

In addition, Will Byers (byerspottery.com) will teach a 4-week class on Mondays from 6-8 pm from November 28 – December 19, with tuition of $125. By appointment, the Clay Studio may offer Pottery Samplers to folks who just want a short-term experience while in town.

Each of the Clay Studio teachers has studied at the college level and beyond and has taught pottery to a wide age-range of students throughout their careers and each is qualified and trained to teach a wide-range of techniques. Open Studio is offered as a time for students to practice what they have learned in class, without instruction. An experienced potter or teacher is on hand to answer basic studio questions and procedures.

BMCA CLAY STUDIO INSTRUCTORS

Geoff Bird is the senior member of the Black Mountain Center for the Arts Clay Studio potters by virtue of his teaching at the Center since 2000 and over 40 years working in the ceramic arts. His experience in making beautiful pottery has led him to representation throughout the southeast. Geoff studied at various schools and studios in North Carolina when pottery was experiencing a renaissance in the 1960’s. At the BMCA Clay Studio Geoff teaches ongoing basic clay on the wheel classes. Geoff is admired and emulated by his students and is patient and encouraging with folks learning to master the wheel. His work is currently sold at the Morning Sky Pottery on Cherry Street.

Will Byers began working with clay over twenty years ago, while studying ceramic arts at the University of Tennessee. He founded New Moon Pottery in 1995, upon completing a 30-month apprenticeship at Monsarrat Pottery, near Knoxville, Tennessee. Will moved to Western North Carolina in 2000, where he and his wife Trish re-established the pottery in Swannanoa, and then in Black Mountain, changing the name to Byers Pottery. They both specialize in functional, high-fired stoneware, with rich beautiful glazes. Will’s teaching style is such that students are inspired to work at their own pace with plenty of encouragement and positive feedback given, as well as individual attention, to help students work out their own relationship with clay, and the potter’s process.

Charles Freeland is a graduate of Austin College and the University of North Texas. He holds an MFA in ceramics with a minor in painting and drawing. Charles has taught at a number of different programs from Texas to Illinois. While in Illinois, Charles taught for Bradley University, Lakeland Community College and Eastern Illinois University in a variety of areas from ceramics to multicultural aesthetics. A member of the Illinois Artisans Program who shows work in the state run gallery system. For the past ten years he has been a part of Sally Jones Pottery in Montreat, from artist-in-residence to technical supervisor. Charles has moved to the Black Mountain area, a return to his ancestral roots and love of the mountains, where he is the BMCA Clay Studio Manager.

Elise Reed Elise is a graduate of Salisbury University in Maryland, and has studied weaving & metal smithing at Penland School of Crafts, as well as pottery with Geoff Bird here at the BMCA Clay Studio. She recently fulfilled her student teaching requirement in the Buncombe County Schools at W. D. Williams Elementary School in Swannanoa, while completing the teacher certification program in art education at UNC-Asheville. She will teach classes for youth and families.

Annie Singletary holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and completed a residency at the Odyssey Center for the Ceramic Arts. She lives in Black Mountain with her husband and two sons. She and her husband are involved with Camps Merri-Mac and Timberlake, with Annie’s role being that of equestrian program supervisor. Her love for nature and her outdoor lifestyle keep her highly motivated in her work in clay. Her pottery is functional, made from porcelain and a variety of glazes. She compares the forms and patterns in her pottery to those in both nature and textiles.

One teacher is leaving

Maureen Joyce, one of our teachers, is leaving to relocate to Pennsylvania with her family this summer.

Her students threw her a "going away" party yesterday.

Great food, good laughs, a few tears...Maureen will really be missed here.

I hope you'll find another clay studio that you can enjoy as much as you have nourished this one.

What's New?

While Rita took detailed minutes of the meeting last night, I just had a few.

There will be a survey coming to all pottery people, regarding your preferences for summer Open Studio hours, and several other studio interests. Kuddos to Sarah for putting this together.

Excellent meeting. All who were there contributed and some new and old ideas were tossed around. Questions were asked and answered. Loved having Ryanne and Zoe there part of the time. Well, what do you expect when Zoe is less interested than Mom in people talking, and not cooing over her? Cooing happened before and after, however. We love you, Zoe!

I do remember talking about having more responsibility as students for cleaning up where we had been working. One area to think about is the sink. To keep excessive amounts of clay from going into the little collection jar under the sink, we should be washing our hands in the big blue barrel first before then doing final rinses in the sink. I know I'd forgotten this routine lately, so I reminded myself and everyone else. It's simple to put all that clay into the big blue barrel instead of into the trap. All clay studios have a system to keep clay from going down the drain...or stopping it up.

More tips will be posted around the studio to keep us aware of the "best ways" of doing things. It's just a matter of education really.

Thanks to Rita, Gale and Sarah for taking care of the management end of things, so we can enjoy the artistic side.

As mentioned in yesterday's post, each of these teachers has studied at the college level and beyond and has taught pottery to a wide age-range of students throughout their careers. Each is qualified and trained to teach a wide-range of techniques. In addition to class session, Open Studio is a time for students to practice what they have learned in class. Although no instruction is offered during this time, an experienced potter or teacher is on hand to answer basic studio questions and procedures.

The weekly schedule is posted to the right on this blog. Look on yesterday's posting for more information, or come by the studio and check it out. This air conditioned studio right in the heart of Black Mountain is available for you and your friends for your creative pleasure!

Sarah Meyer will offer Paint on Pottery Samplers to folks who just want a one-day experience on Monday afternoons.

We are a "community studio" Most students would express satisfaction about the positive experiences they have had here; working at a pace that's comfortable for themselves, creating something new weekly, learning and sharing with everyone in the studio, and making new friends.

Sign up for a class and give yourself a summer vacation that’s fun and therapeutic without leaving town. A class consists of six 2-hour sessions on the wheel or with slab work with an experienced potter, 25 lbs. of clay, twelve to fifteen hours a week of Open Studio practice time, glazing instruction, and firings of the pots you make. The Paint on Pottery Sampler will be offered on Mondays from 1:30-3:30 pm from June 13 through July 18, with no class on July 4. Pre-made pots, either mugs, bowls, or tumblers/vases, will be available for a participant to glaze during the first hour. The second hour will be devoted to learning basic skills with clay, including trying the pottery wheel. No object will be made to take away, but the glazed pre-made pieces will be fired and can be picked up at a later time. Each piece is $25, including glazing and firing. There is a minimum of four pieces for one person, or a minimum of two people in a session at $25 per person. Pre-registration is recommended.

We have several announcements to make, so please check all below:

1.The schedule for the first summer session is attached (see listing to right of this post) with classes beginning May 30. We would like to be able to offer all these classes, but that means we have to have students. Please check and see if there is a time when you can sign up!

2. POTTERY MEETING: Sarah has scheduled a meeting for current students and teachers on Wednesday, May 25 at 6 pm (during Open Studio). She will be discussing what’s happening in the studio, possibilities of pottery markets this summer, and more. Please try to attend, if possible.

3. THURSDAY OPEN STUDIO – is currently being held 1-4 pm, rather than 2-4.

4. RAKU – due to insufficient enrollment, the Raku class scheduled for Tuesday, May 24, has been POSTPONED. A new date will be announced soon.

John was the spokesperson for The Western North Carolina Clay Club, an open group of pottery people who gather monthly to eat and do something interesting. Or maybe they don't always eat, just gather to get out of their studios, mostly from Yancey and Mitchell Counties.

BMCA Clay Studio Offers Next Set of Classes

Beginning Monday March 7 a new term of classes will begin at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts Clay Studio, located in the old city garage at the back of the Center at 225 W. State Street. All Adult Classes are $135 for 6-weeks, plus $35 for the lab fee that covers clay, glazes, firing, and Open Studio. Most classes have a minimum enrollment, and registration is due three days prior to the first class. To register call 828/669-0930.

For learning the basics of the wheel and continuing practice, three classes are offered. Geoff Bird teaches an ongoing clay class on Thursdays from 4-6 pm, which a beginning or intermediate student can begin at any time. Gwen Ottinger and Maureen Joyce each teach an Adult Wheel Class, also available to beginners or intermediates. Maureen’s class meets Tuesdays from 10-noon and Gwen’s class is on Mondays from 6-8 pm.

For students who are wanting to take their skills to the next level or learn something different, Will Byers will teach a class on Japanese bowls, lidded pots and teapots on Wednesdays from 4-6. It is appropriate for beginning and advanced students.

Joyce will continue to teach “Clay Connections” class on Thursdays from noon-2 pm for folks who have a special project in mind – a “mud bucket list,” if you will. This class is for folks who have some experience with clay and are looking to create something unique to them. In addition, Joyce is heading up a series of field trips to local experienced potters and clay resources. These trips are an inspiration to students learning pottery, whether for the first time or after many years of study.

For those under the age of thirteen, Ottinger will teach a Family Clay time for an adult and child on Sundays from 2-4 pm from March 13 through April 3. The Family Clay time is a 4-week session and costs $100, including clay, glazes and firing, but includes no Open studio time. An additional child may be included for $75. This class is a great opportunity for a parent and child to experience clay together.

A similar class for Adults will be offered on consecutive Friday nights, March 25 and April 1 from 6-8. TGIF Big Kid Clay Playtime offers the opportunity to come play with clay. Take this opportunity to sample hand building techniques to learn the relaxing benefits of this creative outlet. With your specific choice of project designs offered by the instructor, or your own inspired idea, this is a chance to try clay without a long commitment. For $45 you get two classes (one wet clay, one glaze day). No experience is necessary. The class has a 3-student minimum, with registration due by Tuesday, March 22. Although no beginning wheel instruction is offered in this session experienced wheel students are welcome. Finished products can be picked up the second week of April.

Reaching out to the Clay Community Field Trips have been incredibly inspiring and informational for all of us who have been able to participate! As our programming continues we hope to have you join in the fun...

Join us this Friday, February 25th for a studio tour and Demonstration with Annie Singletary! We meet at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts at 8:45 and carpool a short distance to Annie's home for this event. Then on Monday March the 7th we have been welcomed to Akira Satake's studio in Swannannoa for a studio tour and talk beginning at 12 noon. The following Friday, the 11th of February we are heading to Asheville to Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts where we will receive a studio and gallery tour with a demonstration by a resident artist.

BMCA Clay Studio Offers New Term of Classes

Pottery classes will start the week of January 17 at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts Clay Studio, located in the old city garage at the back of the Center at 225 W. State Street. Most classes are on a 6-week cycle. All Adult Classes are $135 for 6-weeks, plus $35 for the lab fee that covers clay, glazes and firing. Other classes have varying fees.

Sarah Meyer is Studio Manager. Geoff Bird teaches an ongoing clay class on Thursdays from 4-6 pm, which a student, whether beginning or intermediate, can begin at any time. Gwen Ottinger and Maureen Joyce each teach an Adult Wheel Class, also available to beginners and intermediates. Maureen’s class meets Tuesdays from 10-noon and Gwen’s class is also on Tuesdays from 6-8 om. . In addition, Gwen will teach 2 classes geared to young people: a Teen Class on Sundays from 3-5 pm for students in 6^th-12^th grades, and a Family Clay time for an adult and child on Saturday mornings from 10-noon. The Teen class is $150 for 6-weeks and includes the lab fee, but no Open Studio. The Family Clay time is a 4-week session and costs $100, including clay, etc., but also includes no Open studio time. An additional child may be added for $75.

There are several new classes this term. Joyce will offer a “Clay Connections” class on Thursdays from noon-2 pm for folks who have a special project in mind – a “mud bucket list,” if you will. Limited to six couples, the class will offer an opportunity to make something together and have a duo of fun date nights to share with your “someone special.” The Valentine class will be $60 per couple.

Will Byers, new to the teaching roster this term, will begin a class called “Dinnerware Set” on Wednesdays from 4-6. It is appropriate for beginners and beyond. Students will come away with at least 2-place settings of plate, bowl and mug. Byers began working with clay over twenty years ago, while studying ceramic arts at the University of Tennessee. He founded New Moon Pottery in 1995, upon completing a 30-month apprenticeship at Monsarrat Pottery, near Knoxville, Tennessee. After moving to western NC in 2000 Will and his wife Trish re-established the pottery in the Swannanoa Valley, changing the name to Byers Pottery. The Byers Pottery studio specializes in functional, high-fired stoneware, with rich beautiful glazes.

Bird is the senior member of the Clay Studio’s potter teachers by virtue of his teaching at the Center since 2000 and 40 years working in the ceramic arts. His experience in making beautiful pottery has led him to representation throughout the southeast. He now makes his home in Swannanoa, NC, where he also has his own Morning Sky Studio. Gwen Ottinger, a Maryland native, is the Visual Arts teacher at Artspace Charter School in Swannanoa. A B.F.A. graduate from East Carolina University with a concentration in ceramic arts, she completed her K-12 Visual Arts certification for teaching art at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and completed a pottery apprenticeship in Baltimore. Her work has been sold in several area galleries. Currently the manager of Morning Sky Pottery on Cherry Street, Maureen Joyce studied Fine Art at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. One of the very first students to enroll in classes at the renovated BMCA Clay Studio, she has been involved in every aspect of its revival – from running Open Studio times to assisting with both Raku and Pit-fire workshops to making the letters for the sign on the front to organizing the Pottery Markets to cleaning the studio. Holly Jolly Show and Market
– The Gallery Show is open to all current teachers, Independent Study members, and students, as well as anyone who served as a Studio Assistant in 2010. Current students should work with their teacher to choose a piece for the show. Teachers, Studio Assistants, and Independent Study members should bring 2-3 pieces on Monday, November 29, and selections will be made by Gale and Sarah, who are curating the show. With your permission, pieces not chosen for the show will be in the Market. Work in the show that sells is paid on a 65/35 split between the potter and the Center, respectively, with checks cut after the show closes in January. However, “Not For Sale” pieces can also be in the show.

- The Pottery Market is open to anyone who has taken a class or workshop at the BMCA Clay Studio in 2010. This is a fundraiser, so work that sells is paid on a 50/50 split between each potter and the Center, with checks cut early in January. Pieces can be brought to the Studio the week of Nov. 29 – Dec. 2. With your permission, work not sold on Friday, Dec. 3 may remain until Dec. 23 on a table set up in the upstairs hallway. More information about pricing, volunteering, etc., will be forthcoming.
Open Studio/Thanksgiving Holiday – There will be no Open Studio or classes Nov. 24, 25, and 26 (Thanksgiving holidays); to make up for that, on SATURDAY, NOV. 27 – there will be a BIG 4-hour Open Studio, from 11 am – 3 pm.

Tile Project – If you have not picked up a tile from the studio to add to the Community Tile Project for the Gallery Show, now is the time.
Nov. 18 – last bisque firing.
Nov. 27 – last day to turn in tiles for glaze firing.

Next Session’s Classes: The classes for the current six weeks will end the week of Thanksgiving, except for Geoff’s class, which is ongoing. New classes will begin the week of Nov. 29, and continue until the 2nd week of January (with no classes meeting the week of December 27.). All current classes will be repeated, with the exception of the Maureen’s Decorative Tile Making on Thursdays from 12-2 pm. In its place, she will teach a 3-week class, on Dec. 2, 9, and 16, to allow anyone who wants to make holiday gifts and have them completed in time. A more detailed description is forthcoming.

Holiday Closing: The Studio will be closed for the holidays from Dec. 24 – Jan. 2. All students are encouraged to thoroughly wrap their work in plastic at their last class or Open Studio before Dec. 24 to ensure it will not dry out.

BMCA Clay Studio Offers New Line-Up and More for Fall Classes

The Black Mountain Center for the Arts Clay Studio announces its fall schedule with a few changes in the works. After a review over the summer, the Center’s Clay Studio is moving to a primarily curriculum based schedule. In addition, all classes will now be six weeks in length, rather than the previous option of students choosing 4- or 8-week sessions. This allows a more uniform structure and gives students a longer opportunity to learn technique. The Center is offering more class options than before, but the format will now have a dual emphasis on product and process. Unless otherwise noted, tuition for a 6-weeks session is $135 plus a $35 lab fee to cover clay, glazes and firing and Open Studio time. Classes Offered cover a range of times and themes. In addition to three returning teachers, Judi Ashe, Geoff Bird and Gwen Ottinger, Maureen Joyce will join the teaching staff, while other teachers may be added in the near future. Information on the qualifications of instructors may be found on the website and at the Studio. Also new is Studio Operations Manager, Sarah Mayer, who will regularly be in the Studio, along with Joyce, to make Open Studio times available, to oversee kiln firings and other responsibilities. Classes and scheduled times are listed below.

Beginning Wheel Learning and Practicing the Basics. Two class times offered; Tuesdays, 10am – noon, taught by Maureen Joyce, and Tuesdays, 6-8 pm, taught by Gwen Ottinger. Classes begin October 19. Our teachers offer a class that will take you step-by-step through the stages of throwing a pot on the wheel, to altering or adding designs to it, to glazing and preparing it for firing. The focus will be on centering the clay, opening it to make a cylinder which can be turned into a cup, mug or bowl, finishing the shape, trimming the pot, and properly preparing it for both bisque and final firings. Class may be repeated a number of times until students are ready to move on.

Teen Clay Class: Projects in Clay for Grades 6-12 Taught by Gwen Ottinger, Sundays, 2-4 pm. Class begins Sunday, October 24, 2010. Tuition is $135 plus a lab fee of $15. This class will teach young people to make specific items through wheel-throwing and other methods. Students will go through the process of bisque firings, glazing and final firings for pieces such as bowls and mugs that may be appropriate for holiday gifts. The class does not include Open Studio times.

Ongoing Wheel Class: A Less Structured Approach Taught by Geoff Bird, Thursdays, 4-6 pm. Classes are offered on an ongoing enrollment in 6-week increments. In this class students work with clay at their own pace. The class is open to beginner through intermediate with new techniques taught on a one-on-one basis, whether by wheel or hand. One student might be working on one long-term project, while another might be making a series or set of items in a similar vein. Occasionally students travel to an off- site location for a raku-firing session or other learning experiences.

Intermediate Wheel: Beyond the Basics Taught by Gwen Ottinger, Mondays, 6-8 pm, beginning October 18. Once students have mastered the basics in beginning wheel classes, they are ready to move on to lessons that include refining their skills and making more challenging ware such as plates, teapots, pitchers, serving pieces and sculptural work, along with learning more about glazes and firing.

Beginners Handbuilding: An Exploration into Handbuilt Functional Ware Taught by Judi Ashe, Wednesdays, 4-6 pm, beginning October 20. Many novices are unaware that working with clay can be just as rewarding using hand building techniques as throwing on the wheel. In this class, students will learn how to pinch a pot, coil a vessel, and make tiles and dinnerware from slabs. Input from the students will generate additional projects. Judi will execute at least one demo each class, and will also include some group-oriented activities. Even if the student has taken a Hand Building class before, Judi's unique ways of building with clay will be valuable information. As this class evolves, Judi intends to offer an Intermediate Hand Building Class as well.

Exploring the Sacred Object in Everyday Life Taught by Judi Ashe, Fridays, 10 am – noon, beginning October 22. This class will focus on hand built forms that allow the student to connect to what is sacred in their own life. Many different forms have emerged in these classes in the past, ranging from unique ceremonial pieces, burning bowls, urns for ashes, masks, tea ceremony vessels, etc. This is a very rich and deep class that many clay students can enjoy, and really brings the group together in a powerful way. This class is open to students of all levels. Using the wheel in addition to hand building to achieve the forms is also allowed. This is not a class focused on creating objects for sale, but is, instead, all about the exploration of clay as a medium for expressing the sacred. Join Judi on this journey into the rich world of the Sacred Object.

Decorative Tile Making Taught by Maureen Joyce, Thursdays, 12-2 pm, beginning October 21. Whether you are looking to make tiles to place in a specific room of your home, or as gifts for a special occasion, expressing your individuality through the tiles is an exciting and fun process. Students will use the slab roller to begin the tile, then follow the teacher’s guidance or use their own creativity toward embellishing each tile for the firing process. A quilt of student tiles is planned for the Clay Studio Show to open later this year.

Independent Study (Replaces Community Membership). Experienced potters who are in need of a space to work in and who do not require instruction may apply for an Independent Study – a self-guided experience. These students will use the studio during Open Studio times. The fee of $100 for six-weeks includes limited firing and glaze materials, but clay approved for use is for sale separately. This class is not for the purpose of production pottery, as BMCA is a teaching studio only.

Holly de Saillan will teach a class in Making Mosaics at the BMCA Clay Studio on four consecutive Mondays, April 12 - May 3 from 2-4 pm. Cost is $125, which includes clay, glazes & firing. In the class students will make their own tiles using a variety of techniques, then put together a sampler mosaic. A supply list will be provided before the class begins. Class size is limited, so early registration is recommended. For more information and to register, call the Black Mountain Center for the Arts at 828/669-0930. The Center is located at 225 W. State Street, and the Clay Studio is adjacent to the Center.

de Saillan is an experienced potter and teacher who lives in the Asheville area and also teaches ceramics and mosaics at Odyssey Center for the Ceramic Arts and around western NC. Her inspirations come from nature, contemporary folk art and (currently) artists Niki de St. Phalle, Antoni Gaudi, Raymonde Isadore, Joan Miro and Marc Chagall among many others. Clay and mosaic have been her mode of artistic expression for thirty years.

In her classes she believes it is important that every student feel successful. For her the work of art is about the love of creating. Imitative work is not her intent – she teaches techniques and ideas, not how to make a copy of her work.

About her work in clay, Holly writes, “My work is an echo of the world that surrounds me. I experience life through my various senses and allow my hands to form representations of that life from clay. Through this process of raw creation, I hope to connect others to the complexity and mystery of life and bring to all a sense of wonder.

“My work is very organic in form; clay, unlike many other mediums is not far removed from the earth in which it was created. Having such a close connection with the natural environment allows my work to be extremely dynamic and spontaneous. There are few constants in my ever-evolving work; color, shape and texture all seem to oscillate and surprise, which, to me, is the most fascinating aspect of creation.

“My most recent line of work stems from a long-lived affinity for beetles. Being such a diverse order of the animal kingdom, I became entirely enthralled with the variety of their body shapes and colorings. From this pet fancy blossomed an entire stage of work that has truly redefined my perspective of art. These pieces are not only art, but also, more simply, extensions of my being alive, here, on this earth. “

We will starting off with a free event exchanging "Tricks of the Trade" with the clay studio community; We will share cleaver ideas, shortcuts, reminders and new and exciting ways to work with clay. RAKU firings begining in March,,,this will be a once-a-month opportunity to test the Raku firing method with your bisque ware creation- we will provide the Raku Glazes and kiln for a fee, and while we are still ironing out the details thought you may want to keep the opportunity in mind!

Month long sessions provide one-on-one instruction and experimentation, RAKU clay and glaze materials, two RAKU glaze firings, and open studio time to work on your one of a kind creations. Sourwood Festival and Things to Come

thanks to all who pitched in and helped our Sourwood pottery market fundraiser to be successful! We were able to raise funds to improve our studio with new tools and necessary equipment.
Remember....t's not too early to start thinking about the Holly Jolly event in December!

New studio schedule coming out soon....until then please note that we are not open Saturday and Sunday at this time!

For those who will be selling their work: Please labels each piece with price tag (available in studio) prior to Saturday AND inventory and label pieces accordingly for your records. (example $15 mug #1, $20 bowl #2, $15 plate #3 etc) For more direction suggestions on pricing and inventory see AJ or Maureen.

BMCA Clay Studio is fired up for the upcoming Sourwood festival!! Please take advantage of the

Looks like all the hard work for the Pottery Market this past weekend really attracted some attention from the public!

We will be doing the math sometime early this week, but early indications are that the sales were over $1000 dollars!

In addition to the funds we were able to raise, I believe our goal to reach out to the community and show them the possibilities of our Clay studio participants was achieved as well.

Thank You for making this event possible- I hope you enjoyed the feedback from the customers, friendship of your fellow workers and experience of a pottery market !

PIT FIRE CLASS !!!!!

Coming to the BMCA Clay Studio an alternative firing course focusing on the ancient art of the Pit Fire.

Come and explore this exciting firing process!

Together, we will take your clay creations, bury them deep inside a fire pit full of several layers of organic debris, sawdust, dog food and carefully placed chemicals, and watch as a 10-hour old fire turns your clay into a work of art!

Handbuilding and Low Fire Surface Class

with Visiting Artist Cassie Ryalls

The Black Mountain Center for the Arts Clay Studio will offer a 6-week workshop on Hand

Building and Sculpture, taught by Cassie Ryalls, on Tuesdays, 6-8 pm, from May 5 – June 9

Cost of the workshop is $185. Materials are included in the cost.

Ryalls’ focus on hand building and sculpture is clearly seen in her own work. In assisting clay students in this workshop she will be encouraging creativity with the sculpture, and helping them experiment with the surface of hand built objects from beginning to end. The class will use low-fire clay and glazes.

Cassie Ryalls graduated from Berea College in Kentucky, but grew up in West Virginia. As an art and psychology major, she found the influence of nature was through the human form – a foot, shoulder, lip, etc. Cassie writes, “As I [hand] build each piece, working coil on top of coil, the process reminds me that each person is made up of many different layers. The human forms are minimal and simplified to draw more attention to the way they interact with the other forms. Texture and metal additions are used to communicate the relationships amongst the figures. She continues, “To recognize a human form is simple. To understand another human is not. Our lives are built around forming relationships with other humans. My body of work is my interpretation of these connections as well as portrayals of different situations that lead us to a greater understanding of our fellow humans.

Welcome to the BMCA Clay Studio Blog!!

We are excited about entering into the blog world because we have so many exciting things happening at the studio that people need to know about.

First of all, a brief history on who we are and how we came about:

The Black Mountain Center for the Arts Clay Studio is tucked back behind the Center for the Arts in the Old City Garage. Our building has gone through many renovations in the past several years to become what you see today.

The Clay studio began when Morning Sky Pottery was held and operated out of the building by Geoff Byrd, who we are still fortunate to have in the studio.

With the help of Gale Jackson and her grant writing abilities and passion to have a community pottery studio part of the Center for the Arts the process began.

Many people have worked very hard to have this building serve as it does today.

Gale and Rita operate and run the Center for the Arts and the Clay Studio. Many Board members have helped do everything from plumbing and building to creating signs for the outside. Resident potters Geoff Byrd, AJ Reisman, Lane Kauffman and Annie Singletary helped to fully outfit the studio to be in working order. A lot of people have put a lot into this space and we are proud to say our doors have been opened 1 year and we are going strong.

Today, the residents and wonderful studio assistant Maureen Joyce have the studio open to the public several times a week and classes are held within these times as well.

We need your help to keep up the momentum. The purpose of this blog is to spread the word about us and to keep those involved motivated and encouraged to continue in clay.

Our community is saturated with talented people waiting to get their hands in clay and they may not know that just around the corner is a place where they can do just that.

So send your friends to this blog, tell all you know of your experiences in clay and let's help to keep our clay community thriving.

We will have small write ups about people involved in the studio, interesting facts, tips, stories, sometimes maybe some random things.

We encourage you to leave comments to let us know of things you are interested in having on here.

These were made as a donation to the studio to help beautify. Didn't they do a great job!

Pottery Classes: 4 and 8-week sessions of 2-hour classes are available at various times on weekdays. Cost is $90 for 4-weeks, or $180 for an 8-week session, which includes Open Studio practice times, plus a $35 Lab fee that covers 25 lbs. of clay, glazing and firing. Teachers: Lane Kaufmann, AJ Reisman, Geoff Bird, and Annie Singletary.
